Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (Often referred to as Bedugul Temple)
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is one of Bali’s most iconic and picturesque water temples, located in the Bedugul highlands of Tabanan Regency. The temple sits on the shores of Lake Beratan, surrounded by cool mountain air, misty hills, and lush greenery, creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.
Historical and Cultural Significance : The temple was built in the 17th century and is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes, and rivers. Water plays a vital role in Balinese agriculture, especially in the subak irrigation system, and Ulun Danu Beratan Temple serves as an important spiritual center for farmers who pray for fertile land and abundant harvests.
Temple Architecture : The most famous structure within the complex is the meru, a multi-tiered pagoda-style shrine that appears to float on the lake when water levels rise. The traditional Balinese architectural design blends harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape, making the temple a popular subject for photography.
Natural Environment : Located at an altitude of about 1,200 meters above sea level, the Bedugul area offers a cool climate throughout the year. The calm waters of Lake Beratan, combined with mountain views and colorful flower gardens, provide a refreshing escape from Bali’s coastal heat.
Religius aktivities : Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is still actively used for Hindu ceremonies and festivals. On special occasions, visitors may witness traditional rituals, offerings, and prayer ceremonies performed by local communities.
Visitor Experience : Visitors can explore the temple grounds, enjoy scenic lake views, take boat rides on Lake Beratan, and visit nearby attractions such as botanical gardens and local markets. The temple is easily accessible and well-maintained, with facilities including parking areas, restaurants, and souvenir stalls.
