Besakih Temple is the largest and most sacred temple complex in Bali. It is situated on the slopes of Mount Agung, the island’s highest volcano, and is widely known as the “Mother Temple of Bali.”

The temple complex consists of more than 80 individual temples, with Pura Penataran Agung as the main and most important shrine. Besakih Temple has been a center of Balinese Hindu worship for over a thousand years and plays a vital role in religious ceremonies, festivals, and rituals across the island.

Besakih Temple is dedicated to the Hindu Trimurti—Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). Its terraces, stone stairways, and traditional Balinese architecture reflect the deep spiritual and cultural heritage of Bali.

Surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, Besakih Temple is not only a place of worship but also one of Bali’s most important cultural and historical landmarks.

Temple Complex : The complex consists of one main temple, Penataran Agung, and 25 supporting temples, known as the Pakideh Temples.

Spiritual Function : Penataran Agung Temple is dedicated to the worship of the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Other temples within the complex are devoted to specific deities: Dewa Iswara (east), Brahma (south), Mahadeva (west), and Vishnu (north).
